What is the TCF IRN?

1 - The test

The TCF IRN (Integration, Residence and Nationality) is a new version of the test (starting January 3rd, 2022) that is specifically intended for foreigners over 16 years of age, who wish to validate their level of French for various purposes:

  • Validate an A1 level as part of the OFII citizen pathway (French Office of Immigration and Integration).
  • Get a long-term visa
  • Apply for French citizenship
  • 2 - The sections of the test

    The TCF IRN includes 4 mandatory sections:

  • Listening: Group test: 20 multiple choice questions (4 answer choices, one correct answer)
  • Reading: Group Test: 20 multiple choice questions (4 answer choices, one correct answer)
  • Writing: Group test: 3 exercises
  • Speaking: Individual face-to-face test with an examiner: 3 exercises
  • The TCF IRN assesses language skills only. Knowledge of French history, culture, and society is not assessed in this test.

    The test lasts 1 hour and 15 minutes in total. The duration of each section is detailed below:

  • Listening: 15 minutes
  • Reading: 20 minutes
  • Writing: 30 minutes
  • Speaking: 10 minutes
