What is the TCF IRN?

1 - The test

Open from January 3, 2022 , the TCF IRN (Integration, Residence and Nationality) is a new version of the test which is specifically aimed at foreigners over 16 years old wishing to validate their level of French for different objectives:

  • Obtain validation of level A1 as part of the OFII (French Office for Immigration and Integration) citizen course
  • Apply for a long-term resident card
  • Apply for French nationality

Preparation for the TCF

2 - The tests

The TCF IRN includes 4 compulsory tests :

  • Oral comprehension: Group test: 20 multiple-choice questions (4 answer choices, only one correct answer)
  • Written comprehension: Group test: 20 multiple-choice questions (4 answer choices, only one correct answer)
  • Written expression: Group test: 3 exercises
  • Oral expression: Individual face-to-face test with an examiner: 3 exercises

The TCF IRN only assesses language skills. Knowledge of French history, culture, and society is not assessed in this test.

Regarding the duration of the test, the latter lasts 1 hour 15 minutes in total. The duration of each test is detailed below:

  • Listening comprehension: 15 minutes
  • Reading comprehension: 20 minutes
  • Written expression: 30 minutes
  • Oral expression: 10 minutes
