01

What is the TOEFL ITP?

The TOEFL ITP (Institutional Testing Program) is an English-language multiple-choice test designed by ETS. It measures academic English comprehension.

It is an institutional test: schools, universities, and training organizations administer it to assess and place their students, for example when entering a program or to measure progress.

Unlike the TOEFL iBT, the TOEFL ITP does not include speaking or writing sections and is not used for official admissions or visa applications.

02

TOEFL ITP levels

The TOEFL ITP is available in two levels, depending on the intended audience:

TOEFL ITP Level 1

Intermediate to advanced level. Score range: 310 to 677 points. This is the most commonly administered version.

TOEFL ITP Level 2

Beginner to intermediate level. Scores from 200 to 500 points, suitable for candidates at a more modest level.

03

The TOEFL ITP (Level 1) test sections

The test consists of three multiple-choice sections and takes approximately 1 hour and 55 minutes.

Listening Comprehension (oral comprehension)
≈ 35 min · 50 questions

Based on recordings (short conversations, longer dialogues, presentations), you answer multiple-choice questions.

Structure and Written Expression (structure and written expression)
25 min · 40 questions

Multiple-choice questions assessing your command of English grammar and written structures.

Reading Comprehension (reading comprehension)
55 min · 50 questions

Reading a variety of texts followed by multiple-choice questions about meaning, vocabulary, and details.

04

Understand the rating

The TOEFL ITP Level 1 is scored on a scale of 310 to 677 points (200 to 500 for Level 2). The overall score is based on the three sections.

The TOEFL ITP is an institutional test: it is used for placement and monitoring proficiency levels within an institution and is not intended for official admissions, visas, or immigration. Results are provided promptly by the organizing institution.

07

Where can I take the TOEFL ITP?

The TOEFL ITP is administered at the institutions and authorized centers that organize it, in paper-based format or digitally (TOEFL ITP Digital), either on-site or remotely depending on the center.
