The test is an online conversation/interview with an examiner. It takes place at an official LanguageCert SELT test center and lasts between 8 and 9 minutes.
Content of the sections
The ESOL SELT A1 Speaking & Listening exam consists of 4 different parts. These sections assess the candidate's ability to:
- - Understand and use familiar phrases and expressions.
- - Satisfy practical everyday needs related to education, training and social roles.
- - Introduce themselves.
- - Ask questions.
- - Interact easily with a native speaker.

Part 1
Personal information (1.5 minutes)
Candidates state and spell family name.
Tell where they are from.
Answer 3 simple questions about themselves.
Part 2
Everyday situations (1.5 minutes)
The candidates communicate with the examiner in 2 real-life situations.
Candidates must start the conversation or respond.
Part 3
Giving and listening to information (1 - 1.5 minutes)
Candidates ask for and give information.
Candidates talk about similarities and differences between 2 images.
Part 4
Part 4a: Understanding a monologue and answering questions (2 - 2.5 minutes)
Candidates listen to a monologue.
The candidates answer 3 questions about the monologue.
Part 4b: Talking about a subject (2 minutes)
Candidates have 30 seconds to prepare.
Candidates then speak on a topic for 30 seconds.
Finally, the candidates answer the questions.
The candidate receives the preliminary test results by e-mail, 15 minutes after completing the test. Confirmation of official results arrives 3 days after the test.
To pass the test, the candidate must obtain a score of 60/100 or higher. Candidates are assessed on:
- - Communication skills.
- - Listening skills (general and detailed).
- - Diversity of vocabulary.
- - Pronunciation.
- - Fluency of expression.
