Figures from India’s ministry of external affairs show there are 215,720 Indian international students with study permits in Canada by August 2021 (Source).
As of May 2021, Indian students will need to pass a TEF or an IELTS General Training in order to apply for the Canada Study Visa.
Indian students (as well as students from Antigua and Barbuda, Brazil, China, Colombia, Costa Rica, India, Morocco, Pakistan, Peru, Philippines, Senegal, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago and Vietnam) are eligible to apply using the Student Direct Stream (SDS).

Having a TEF certificate will increase the employment opportunity in Canada for after your studies. Furthermore, it will help you to earn points for Canada PR (you can earn up to 54 points based on your score on the 4 compulsory sections of the TEF).
